Magnitude 6.7 earthquake hits Grand Cayman

A strong earthquake was felt throughout Grand Cayman at 6:20 pm on Tuesday, December 14, 2004. According to a preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center in Denver, the epicenter of the magnitude 6.7 event was located some 21 miles south of Bodden Town at a depth of 6.2 miles.
Seismicity maps published by the National Earthquake Information Center indicate that this event was the closest to Grand Cayman occurring since 1990.
According to eyewitness reports, the earthquake lasted between 15 and 30 seconds and prompted the evacuation of offices, supermarkets and other buildings, including the airport control tower, where one witness reported the tower was “rocking one and a half to two feet.”
No casualties have been reported.
